CHICAGO (AP) — Two Illinois lawmakers say violence has become so rampant in Chicago that the National Guard must be called in to help.

Chicago Democratic Reps. John Fritchey and LaShawn Ford made a public plea to Gov. Pat Quinn on Sunday to deploy troops.

The request comes amid a recent surge in violent crime, including a night last week that saw seven people killed and 18 wounded, mostly by gunfire.

Fritchey says Chicago has had 113 homicide victims this year. He says the police department has done a commendable job, but its resources are stretched thin.

Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis says he appreciates the lawmakers’ frustration and willingness to help, but doubts the National Guard is the best answer.

A message left for Quinn wasn’t returned Sunday.

      Yeah, that’s bad when innocents are caught in the crossfire, but personally, I don’t shed too many tears when Gang Ass A and Gang Ass B take each other out…

      But when they go after somebody minding their own business, it helps to be able to defend yourself. About 15 years ago we had a local problem with a bunch of LA bangers that came over trying to take over the territory. Seems they forgot that many of us carry here, and there were a number of high profile incidents where the bangers got some lead for their trouble. Took a couple of years, but it’s a lot quieter here now. I’m guessing they got the message and decided it was better for them back home.

    So what happens when some gang bangers decide to see if their badder than the US Military? Most of the National Guard units have done rotations in Iraq and Afghanistan. They could clean up the problem pretty quick.
