Times Online:

The first trials of controversial sunshielding technology are being planned after the United Nations failed to secure agreement on cutting greenhouse gases.

Bill Gates, the Microsoft billionaire, is funding research into machines to suck up ten tonnes of seawater every second and spray it upwards. This would seed vast banks of white clouds to reflect the Sun’s rays away from Earth.

The British and American scientists involved do not intend to wait for international rules on technology that deliberately alters the climate. They believe that the weak outcome of December’s climate summit in Copenhagen means that emissions will continue to rise unchecked and that the world urgently needs an alternative strategy to protect itself from global warming.

Many methods of cooling the planet, collectively known as geoengineering, have been proposed. They include rockets to deploy millions of mirrors in the stratosphere and artificial trees to suck carbon dioxide from the air. Most would be prohibitively expensive and could not be deployed for decades.

However, a study last year calculated that a fleet of 1,900 ships costing £5 billion could arrest the rise in temperature by criss-crossing the oceans and spraying seawater from tall funnels to whiten clouds and increase their reflectivity.

Silver Lining, a research body in San Francisco, has received $300,000 (£204,000) from Mr Gates. It will develop machines to convert seawater into microscopic particles capable of being blown up to the cloud level of 1,000 metres. This would whiten clouds by increasing the number of nuclei.

The trial would involve ten ships and 10,000sq km (3,800sq miles) of ocean. Armand Neukermanns, who is leading the research, said that whitening clouds was “the most benign form of engineering” because, while it might alter rainfall, the effects would cease soon after the machines were switched off.

Other types of geoengineering, such as mimicking volcanoes by using aircraft to spray reflective sulphate particles in the stratosphere, would have much longer effects on weather patterns.

Stephen Salter, Emeritus Professor of Engineering Design at the University of Edinburgh, said that there was no need to wait for regulations because the trials would not add chemicals to the atmosphere. But Sir David King, former chief scientific adviser to the Government, said that experiments with potential consequences beyond national borders needed international regulations. He told The Times: “I do not see any geoengineering solution which does not have unintended consequences or is not far too expensive.”

I read about this and other ideas being developed in Super Freakenomics. Good read. BUT, why can’t they figure out God has it covered? The volcanic ash in the atmosphere cuts warming way down for one.

It is fkn snowing here in Colorado.
I would like to see the sun please

So you’re going to create clouds…hmmm…seems to me part of the Venus problem IS cloud cover.
And do you wonder what the affects of the clouds will be on things like oh….Plants? Crops? Entire weather systems…oh…let’s say…FLOODING.
And the effect on the ocean and marine life?

Nooooo…none of that is considered. You have to crush the mythical unicorn of global warming!

THESE NUTS ARE GOING TO KILL US ALL!

I think that he might be mentally deranged. For the love, people! I OBJECT to people altering my climate unnaturally!

I’m going to submit paperwork to Gates for some grant money. I have a very novel way of producing clouds that involves Mexican food and cold beer. I can produce quite a bit of clouds literally within hours after ingesting the two aforementioned elements. It will be methane, of course, but I will “alter” the data, much like Algore and his minions did, to secure around $80M for my continued research which should pay for a new laboratory, say in Montana on one of the great trout rivers. And possibly another lab in say, the Keys where I can perform experiments under a more tropical environment.

Think I could get some “Gates Bucks” for this “important” research?

Seawater contains salt. Wouldn’t putting salt water into clouds cause salt water rain? That can’t be good. After all if you put sulphur into clouds, doesn’t that create acid rain?

  • rightangle

During the day clouds will reflect sunlight, but at night, cloud cover keeps the heat in. And are they forgetting how much carbon emissions these vessels will emit, since they’ve claimed it causes global warming?

They need to look at clouds from both sides now, from up and down but still somehow, they really don’t know clouds at all.

Good catch on the emissions angle. What exactly are these vessels using to produce the power to propel all this water into the air? Most likely ‘carbon based’…..

Gates is just another weasel butt sniffer.
We got people living in tent cities, starving, out of work and this no-load-dip-dunk wants to make clouds…Jesus, Mary and all the saints :!:

Use some of your billions to do something worthwhile.

  • MinneSoCold

Umm…. so besides the mention above about acid rain and effecting the climate, wouldn’t adding more moister in the atmosphere over oceans also fuel super hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones, tornados and torrential downpour systems.

Seriously, global warming (myth) is becoming a deadly threat to us all because it’s creating hysteria and anxiety to the point of insanity in influential figures who will promote and do disastrous things based upon fraudulent science and misguided intentions.

If he’s going to fund something useless, I wish he’d fund the space-mirror thing. Not because we need space mirrors, but because they’d have to build and launch a lot of rockets. And that would create a lot of high-skill jobs, and besides, rockets are cool.

…and it would give Obama a mirror big enough for his ego.

gates may know how to make metric butt-loads of money, but he is conclusively proving that business acumen is decidedly NOT equal to wisdom.
