    No secrets here. God helps those who help themselves. We had a major flood in northwest Ohio in 2007. FEMA showed up to “help” after the waters receded. I’m a volunteer firefighter and we were helping clean up downtown. Most everybody in town and the local contractors were there with bodies and equipment. A FEMA lady with a clipboard was screaming to a buddy of mine on a loader that he couldn’t move anything until FEMA gave the o-k. He responded “Lady if your not going to help, at least get the fuck out of the way!”….Classic response to “I’m from the government and I’m here to help”

      Your ‘loader driver’ sounds a lot like my son, a Former Marine, who recently lost his job.

    Proud, self reliant people who suffer without fanfare and roll up their sleeves and work to solve their own problems. Typical Americans.

    The lord helps those that help themselves. The entitlement crowd does not fare well in emergencies. When you you are raised to believe that society owes you something you will sit on your fat ass waiting for assistance instead of helping yourself, much less helping your nieghbor.

    I dont live in New Orleans, I am in Metaire… Still doesnt get around the fact that the US Government has not paid Louisisan 1cent for all the gas and oil raped from us or the wetlands destroyed to get it to you cheaper… the truth, you cant handle it…

      Google it, research Louisiana compensation for natural resources, only state in the union who gets zero money yet we are the richest in oil and gas…

      80% of petroleum passes through Plaquemines parrish.
      30% is refined here
      17% comes from the state itself
      $00.00 in royalties
      thousands of miles of wetlands destroyed

      • For the first 3 miles out from the shoreline, Louisiana — like other states — gets to keep 100 percent of any royalties produced by oil and gas drilling. In the most recent year available, 2008, this amounted to $275 million.

      • Between 3 and 6 miles from the shoreline — a federally owned band formally known as the 8(g) area — the federal government sends 27 percent of the royalties to Louisiana. The reasoning is that federal drilling in this area sucks out some of the oil from deposits that span the 3-mile dividing line between state and federal ownership, so these payments are meant to compensate for the lost revenue to states. In 2009, they totaled $22 million and they’re estimated to be $32 million this year.

      • Beyond 6 miles from the shoreline is considered federal territory. For new drilling projects, states get a 37.5 percent share directly to their treasuries and an additional 12.5 percent for state land and water conservation fund projects. The 37.5 percent figure alone amounted to $6.3 million for Louisiana’s treasury in 2009, with additional estimated amounts of $558,000 in 2010 and $476,000 in 2011.

      This story was about self help after a disaster. Iowa and Tennessee suffered 100 year floods and there were no riots, looting or blaming de gubment. Royalties is a different subject. You must get your news from MSLSD.

      Unless you own the property were the oil is produced, what makes you think you deserve anything? Just because you happen to live in the state? I live in Ohio – you know – the middle of the rust belt. I haven’t received money because of my neighbor’s misfortunes and don’t expect any either.
