Maybe there’s some hope now that Jimmie Hoffa will be found.

The National Marine Sanctuary is located in Alpena Michigan and has some amazing photos and video of shipwrecks in the area. Bob Ballard (from Titanic fame) shot footage and lectured several times in Alpena about the historical value of the ships. I used to fish a lot in Lake Huron and the Nordmeer was one wreck that actually sits above the water line. Pretty amazing stuff.

Also, several years ago, a wreck was found in Lake Superior and it contained a load of hardwood from the 1800′s. Due to the frigid waters the wood was in pristine condition. The divers who discovered it ended up with the rights to the load, salvaged it and sold it to wood workers who made furniture from it. They made millions of dollars from it.

The Edmund Fitzgerald is another ship wreck that sits in extremely frigid waters in Lake Michigan and is pretty much preserved.

The documentary November Requiem just won an Emmy Award It tells the story of the 1958 sinking of the Carl D. Bradley out of Rogers City, Michigan. 23 of the 33 sailors from that tiny town went down with the ship and the documentary tells the story of a community devastated by the loss. My grandfather and six uncles all sailed out of Rogers City’s Calcite plant so this hit pretty close to home. One of my uncle’s had just been promoted and transfered off of the Bradley two weeks prior to it’s sinking.

RE: Correction – The Fitz went down in Superior – not Lake Michigan – my typing misstake.

RE: The Bradley – 33 dead, 2 survivors – Frank Mays and Elmer Fleming. 23 were from Rogers City (pop. approx. 3400 at the time) – leaving 53 children orphaned.
