McCain’s Last Stand?: “Maverick” In Fierce Fight To Hold Onto Senate Seat

McCain's Last Stand

LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. (AP) – A serious re-election fight wasn’t what Republican John McCain expected when he returned to the Senate after losing the presidency.

But the four-term senator is battling for his political life in a race that embodies the volatility of an unpredictable election year. He’s facing former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, a fellow Republican pushing him farther to the right as GOP voters demand conservative purity in their candidates and punish those with ties to the Washington establishment.

Two longtime Senate incumbents have fallen—Bob Bennett, R-Utah, and Arlen Specter, D-Pa. A third—Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark.—could see her hopes dashed this Tuesday in a runoff amid voter inclination to reward political neophytes who adhere to party principles over experience.

McCain’s popularity fell in Arizona as he spent years campaigning outside of it, twice for the White House. Hayworth, a radio talk show host who had been in Congress for a dozen years but lost to a Democrat in 2006, saw a chance for a political comeback.

The behemoth in the race, McCain has a decades-old political organization, millions in the bank and six campaign offices. He’s counting on his deep ties to Arizona and legions of longtime backers to carry him through. In contrast, Hayworth has never run statewide, is struggling to raise money and has just two offices. But he’s being fueled by disaffected McCain backers and voters hungry for new leadership.

“He’s been there too long. And he hasn’t done anything for Arizona,” Ally Miller says of McCain, 73. “It’s time for someone new.”

Among Hayworth supporters, there’s a feeling that McCain hasn’t been a loyal Republican, he’s ignored Arizona and his time has passed. Many have voted for him for years—because, they say, there wasn’t another option. With the 51-year-old Hayworth, people fed up with the status quo—and unwilling to automatically give McCain a new six-year term—have somewhere to turn.

“Hayworth is a true conservative patriot,” said a supporter, John Kessler. “McCain has become a big government, tax-and-spend liberal.”

What the article does not say is that the polling data has consistently shown that John McCain has held leads from 6% to 26%. I have always felt the anti-Mccain animus among some conservatives was and is unjustified. The reason for the McCain leads i ssimple: John McCain is vastly the superior candidate. Sarah Palin and all the Arizona officials elected to national office do very much know what they are doing in supporting John McCain.

Worried about the deficit spending we are doing and the national debt we are racking up? You should be. John McCain, throughout his career, has been a fiscal conservative who has gotten into heated argument over his opposition to earmarked and out of control federal spending. McCain voted against Obama’s deficit spending budgets, denouncing them as “generational theft,” a phrase picked up by Sean Hannity. John McCain also voted against all the Obama bailout bills. J.D. can’t compare on this critical subject; he had his pork barrel spending moments in the Congress.

Worried about ObamaCare and socialized medicine? You should be. John McCain had the most free market approach to health care in 2008 of all the candidates and had always been adamantly opposed to national health care. The GOP National Platform in 2008 was excellent on health care because it adopted the McCain platform on the subject. McCain has strenuously opposed ObamaCare and was accused by the New York Times of throwing bombs on the subject. J.D. can’t compare on this critical subject.

Worried about bailouts? You should be. McCain voted AGAINST every Obama bailout bill and even voted against the second release of TARP monies when Bush was still President in late 2008. J.D. was on the sidelines on these issues because he lost his last race for Congress to a Democrat in an overwhelmingly Republican congressional district that should have been a safe seat even in bad year for the GOP.

Worried about the kind of people in the Obama Administration and nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court? You should be. McCain voted AGAINST the confirmations of tax cheat Geithner, radical pro-abortion advocate Sibellius, leftist attorney Kagan and transnational advocate Koh to their respective positions in the Obama Administration. McCain voted AGAINST the confirmation of Sotomayer to the U.S. Supreme Court. Again, J.D. was on the sidelines on these issues because he lost his last race for Congress.

Worried about foreign policy, military matters and national security because of Obama’s appeasement mentality, lack of experience and naivete? You should be. Few people have the experience and knowledge concerning foreign policy, military matters and national security that John McCain has. He was right about the Iraq War when even many Republicans went wobbly and fought off Democrat led efforts to cut off funding our troops in the field in Iraq. McCain was right to attack Obama for dithering about committing to General McChrystal’s plan for Afghanistan and for not supporting the Iranian dissidents. McCain could be right because he knows his stuff when it comes to Commander in Chief decisions. J.D. can’t compare on this critical subject.

Worried about the lack of real patriotism and the kind of example being set by people in the Obama Administration? You should be. He was a combat naval aviator during the Vietnam War who braved one of the toughest air defenses in history over North Vietnam and served as a P.O.W. for over 5 years in a North Vietnamese prison where he was subjected to real torture. He is the grandson of the Admiral McCain who was Bull Halsey’s right hand man during World War II and the son of the Admiral McCain who was CincPac during the Vietnam War when John McCain, the combat aviator, was a P.O.W. in North Vietnam. John McCain’s 2008 campaign theme of “Country First” reflected a family tradition of military service that has continued with one son who is a Marine who has served several tours of duty in Iraq and another son who is a Naval Academy graduate and serves in the Navy. John McCain’s discussion of serving with a servant’s heart was and is genuine. J.D. can’t compare on this critical subject. Few can.

Worried about amnesty? McVain is for it,present day bullshit to the contrary.

Worried about gun control?,ditto,McVain/leiberman gun showloophole bill. more of same

Freedom of speech, McVain/feinstein campaign reform attempted an end run around the 1st amend.

    • Lone Wolf

John McCain’s campaign theme of ‘let’s be nice’ wasn’t exactly a winner. He’s the definition of a RINO and complicit in the takeover by the nanny state.

    • cclezel

Sorry, McCain betrayed us all with his many stances in direct opposition to his constituents. It is time to send career politicians packing who have abandoned the core principals of our Constitution. Career and politician should never again be used in the manner.

    • solomonpal

Go bass fishing John and God speed. And it does not mean I won’t throw you a bandoleer when you run short Phil.

Being a POW is not a qualifier for public office.

Sorry, Phil. I’m not buying the new and improved John McCain. If he had been as consistently conservative for the last 10 years as he’s been since Jan. 09, john McCain would be president today. Hell, I’ll bet he’d be President if he had simply voted against Bush’s. At minimum, Obama’s victory margin would have been smaller. John McCain spent too much time in the back of his “Straight Talk Express” tour bus going down on the MSM as if he was a groupie backstage at lollapalooza. And on the morning after the election, McC had a come to Jesus moment and became a born again conservative. Senator McCain, you have been weighed, you have been measured and you have been found wanting. Now go away. Please go away.

If I was in AZ I’d vote for JD. McCain has had plenty of chances,,,

  • David

McCain is a real American hero who is past his prime. Move over, Senator.

  • wwtd

the “american hero” has never done much for VN POW’s, or any POW’s.

    • uclimbit

That’s just it. Hasn’t done much of anything, except pander to special interests and the political kick of the week. If he wanted to help AZ, he would have. mccain has just got to go.

  • SACtrainedkiller

Recent history has proven McAmnesty can’t be trusted as far as you can throw him. He has shown himself to be a true RINO always reaching across the aisle to assist the lying liberals to continue to chip away at our constitutional rights. Time to throw out all the career politicians subverting this country from the District of Criminals!

  • The Sentinel at the Gate

Any “right leaning” on McCain’s part is just campaign fluff. Once elected he will go roaring back to the left center just as he has in his “Maverick” role. Quite frankly, I’m bone weary tired of this mentality in Washington these days. Go along to get along has been many a RINO’s mantra and now they are having to pay the fiddler.

Let the bodies hit the floor this November!

  • Chuck O

Of course McCain is acting like a conservative. It’s an election year.

Time to put the mav out to pasture
