HERMOSILLO, Mexico (AP) – Shootout between illegal immigrant/drug trafficking gangs near US border leaves 21 dead.
Prosecutors in northern Sonora state say the gun battle occurred in a sparsely populated area about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the Arizona border.
The state Attorney General’s Office said in a statement that nine people were captured by police at the scene of Thursday’s shootings, six of whom had been wounded in the confrontation.
The area is a prime corridor for immigrant and drug smuggling.
