Clinton Not Only Justifies Byrd’s KKK Past, He Lies While Doing It

Fleeting? Byrd joined the KKK in 1942 and was a leader of his chapter. He wrote a letter praising the KKK in 1947 and defended the Klan in his Senate run in 1958. He voted against Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas and he filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

If his lips are moving, he’s lying. He just can’t help it.

Pres. Clinton is correct when he said that none of us is perfect. I would certainly hope that in our society there is still room for honest repentance, acknowledgement of wrong, and restitution. I’m thinking now of Alabama Gov. George Wallace. Later in his life, he made every effort to admit the mistakes he made during the Civil Rights Movement and to make things right with the African-American community in that great state. That said, Pres. Clinton went well beyond an appeal for understanding in Sen. Byrd’s affiliation with the racist KKK – he trivialized it!! Pres. Clinton went beyond eulogizing Sen. Byrd to engage in revisionist history. No one rises to high office, as Sen. Byrd did, in any organization by having only a “passing association” with it. By trivializing Sen. Byrd’s racism and guilt, he trivialized Sen. Byrd’s repentance!! “After all,” he’s saying, “Sen. Byrd’s Klan association was no big deal anyway.” Pres. Clinton trivialized Sen. Byrd all the while claiming to honor and eulogize him!! A merciless society is not one that I want to live in, but Clinton’s pandering revisionism here not only insults our intelligence – it’s disgusting!!
