Arizona state Treasurer Dean Martin announced Friday he’s suspending his primary challenge to Gov. Jan Brewer, throwing his support behind the Republican in the wake of the federal government’s lawsuit against the state’s controversial immigration law.
In a letter posted on his website, Martin wrote that with the pending lawsuit, he believed “a contested primary would be a distraction.â€
“The Obama Administration’s lawsuit is a blatant attempt to divide us and I will not be part of the problem; rather I intend to be part of the solution,†Martin wrote. “Governor Brewer is going to need all our help to shoulder the burden of defending Arizona from the federal government. It is our duty to stand together as Arizona residents against an intrusive federal bureaucracy.â€
Brewer praised Martin’s decision to end his candidacy, and said she welcomed his support against the immigration lawsuit.
“I agree with Mr. Martin that the greatest threat to Arizona’s economic recovery is from the Obama administration and those who embody his agenda such as Attorney General Terry Goddard. We must stand together to continue Arizona’s comeback,†Brewer said in a statement.
