NEW YORK (AP) – A Hamas leader says Muslims “have to build” a mosque near ground zero.

Mahmoud al-Zahar said Muslims “have to build everywhere” so that followers can pray, just like Christians and Jews build their places of worship.

Al-Zahar spoke Sunday on “Aaron Klein Investigative Radio” on WABC-AM. He is a co-founder of Hamas and its chief on the Gaza Strip.

Sen. Chuck Schumer said Al-Zahar’s comments don’t carry any weight because Hamas is a terrorist organization. Schumer hasn’t taken a stand on the mosque.

Rep. Peter King, who opposes the mosque, said he won’t respond to Hamas.

The mosque is a project of the Cordoba Initiative, an advocacy group that promotes improved relations between Islam and the West. It didn’t respond to Al-Zahar’s comments.

    I’ll agree (as sick as it makes me) with the president that the mosque can legally be built on the site. Private property should not be interfered with due to religion..BUT the prez missed the most golden opportunity to come out as a leader and ‘strongly suggest’ that it not be built there. Instead he took the chicken route and did not comment on the ‘wisdom’.

    I believe this is two fold reasoning. I thing the prez is a double manchurian candidate. One for the muslims and secondary for the dems (which serves the purposes of the first)….but that is just my tinfoil hat wearing opinion…and I wear it proudly.
    Of course it may be as simple as he isn’t in control and his handlers are testing just how far they can go down the road. With foot ball season approaching (basically the roman games to divert the masses) I expect a huge amount of weekend shenanigans by the congress and prez…the sheeple will be distracted.

    I do think a pork slaughterhouse should be built right next door if this is allowed to happen. This would no way be as insensitive as this muslim attempt to punch the face of America……….

    :neutral: Duh, this is news? Everyone knows the Koran requires mosques to be built on the site of military triumphs. Gee, the biggest clue was our beloved Mohammedan Leader’s support!

    and I hope everyone remembers how HAMAS endorsed obama for presidency. This president will always side with the enemy because he himself is an enemy, so I do not understand why everyone is so surprised. The muslims are destroying our country because the electoral college and the anti american media put this asshat in office. If you think its bad now, wait till the end of the presidency to see how much has changed. NOVEMBER NOVEMBER NOVEMBER, and if there is any indication that the elections have been tampered with then….may God bless us.

    Another COMMON SENSE reason for not building this stupid Mosque when you have Hamas endorsing this! Come November 2010 & 2012 I pray change by voting is coming. For if we don’t vote these Politically Correct Politicians out of office then a terrible 2nd Civil War is coming!
