A man robbed a Loomis armored car and shot a guard around 11:20 a.m. Sunday morning before fleeing the scene at the Walmart near 56th and Northern avenues in Glendale, police say.
“It appears as though an armored car delivery pick up was going on,” said Sgt. Brent Coombs, a police spokesman.
Coombs said the suspect fled the scene before police arrived. A police K-9 unit and helicopter are searching the area.
The assailant shot the guard in the hand and leg, Coombs said. Rescue workers transported the man to the hospital, but Coombs said his injuries are “completely survivable.”
“When he was transported (to the hospital), he was conscious and talking to officers,” he said.
Coombs said he doesn’t know how much money was stolen.
Steve Graehling, loss prevention manager for Loomis, said the guard is in stable condition and that dozens of people are being interviewed.
Coombs said it’s unclear if the guard was able to fight back, but said several rounds were fired. All of them were fired by the suspect, Coombs said.
Officials described the assailant as a Black male, in his 20s, about six feet tall. He was last seen wearing a black shirt with black shorts. Police said he ran through the store’s garden center and got into an SUV.
