SANTA ANA, Calif. – A night of winning at a casino turned into terror for a man who was robbed then killed when his assailants ran him over with their car early Friday morning, Santa Ana police said. The man was a victim of what appears to be a follow-home robbery and killing.
Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said officers responded to a call of a woman screaming in the 100 block of South Andres Place at about 5:30 a.m. and found the body of dead man in the street.
Bertagna said the victim, a 55-year-old man, had apparently won several thousand dollars at a casino in Hawaiian Gardens that night and was taking his female passenger home.
The victim’s vehicle, a 2002 Honda Civic, was cut off by another car — described by the passenger as a small, gray car with tinted windows. Bertagna said the passenger in the gray car got out and accosted the victim for his winnings.
“The victim tried to run, the suspect chased the victim and the victim was knocked to the ground,” Bertagna said. “After the altercation the passenger got into the gray car and the driver ran over the victim as the car drove away.”
Despite a knife found next to the victim, the coroner’s report determined he died from blunt force trauma from being struck by the assailant’s car, Bretagna said.
The female passenger in the victim’s car was unharmed. Bretagna said the woman gave the police a partial description of the passenger of the gray car, but could not describe the driver because the windows were tinted.
Bretagna said police found money on the street at the scene.
“I don’t know how much money they got,” he said. “Until we know how much money there was, we won’t know if they got any at all.”
The identity of the dead man is not being released, pending notification of family.
