BBC:

Canada’s minority government has lost a bid to end a rifle and shotgun registry which police say helps to trace guns used in crimes.

Members of parliament voted 153 to 151 to defeat a bill that would have ended the registry, but Conservative PM Stephen Harper vowed to try again.

He said opposition to the regulation was stronger “than it has ever been”.

Opponents say the programme is ineffective and treats rural Canadian hunters and farmers like criminals.

The BBC’s Lee Carter, in Toronto, says the vote in Canada’s parliament was nailbitingly close.

The bill was defeated by an ad hoc parliamentary coalition of Liberals, New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois members.

Canada has only a fraction of the gun crime of its neighbour to the south, the US, but has suffered shocking incidents involving firearms, our correspondent says.

These include the shooting deaths of 14 women killed by a gunman at a Montreal university in 1989.

Families of those victims were among those in the gallery watching the vote.

The registry was instituted in 1996 by the Liberal government of Jean Chretien and is largely backed by Canadian police.

Handguns are already restricted in Canada.

This kind of BS legislation is what happens when liberals are allowed to run anything   All of us conservative gun owners are counting on Harper to keep his word and put this thing to death with extreme prejudice.

Just what we need, a country to our north with it’s citizens disarmed and then the lib storm troopers to fuck things up even worse. Maybe Canada needs to take lessons from their southern hemisphere blokes and just reclaim their country, while there is still time to do so.One of their problems is having a single country with two official languages, sorry but I say fuck that french shit, as Marie would say ‘let them eat shit and die’. I may have that quote wrong but I think that way just the same. Maybe I’m racist, you think?

RA, I don’t think this problem has much to do with having two official languages. It’s more like a rural versus big city elites divide. The big city elites are also in control of the message, especially via the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, which is widely seen as the capital “L” Liberal Party communications wing. It’s been that way for at least a couple of generations now, maybe three.

It’s been a long uphill battle wresting power away from them and restoring a semblance of democracy, but it’s getting close. Although I’m personally not too seriously invested in this particular issue (the long gun registry), I think it may be one of the clinchers.

Where the “French” factor comes in, is with the Bloc Quebecois Party, which fields candidates only in Quebec and has for quite a while now, basically deprived the country as a whole of electing majority Conservative governments. There are two major parties on the small “l” side of the divide that run candidates across the country, and they have gotten into bed with one another on several occasions in my lifetime to implement left-wing policies and legislation.

With so many parties, all but one of which are on the left side of the aisle, it’s nearly impossible for the Conservatives to achieve a majority. Being a resident of one of the western provinces, I’m itching to join a separatist movement out here and kiss the Libs’ sorry asses goodbye.
