“God Did Not Create The Universe” Says “World’s Smartest Man”

(Reuters Life!) – God did not create the universe and the “Big Bang” was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book.

In “The Grand Design,” co-authored with U.S. physicist Leonard Mlodinow, Hawking says a new series of theories made a creator of the universe redundant, according to the Times newspaper which published extracts on Thursday.

“Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist,” Hawking writes.

“It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going.”

Hawking, 68, who won global recognition with his 1988 book “A Brief History of Time,” an account of the origins of the universe, is renowned for his work on black holes, cosmology and quantum gravity.

Since 1974, the scientist has worked on marrying the two cornerstones of modern physics — Albert Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, which concerns gravity and large-scale phenomena, and quantum theory, which covers subatomic particles.

His latest comments suggest he has broken away from previous views he has expressed on religion. Previously, he wrote that the laws of physics meant it was simply not necessary to believe that God had intervened in the Big Bang.

He wrote in A Brief History … “If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason — for then we should know the mind of God.”

In his latest book, he said the 1992 discovery of a planet orbiting another star other than the Sun helped deconstruct the view of the father of physics Isaac Newton that the universe could not have arisen out of chaos but was created by God.

“That makes the coincidences of our planetary conditions — the single Sun, the lucky combination of Earth-Sun distance and solar mass, far less remarkable, and far less compelling evidence that the Earth was carefully designed just to please us human beings,” he writes.

Hawking, who is only able to speak through a computer-generated voice synthesizer, has a neuro muscular dystrophy that has progressed over the years and left him almost completely paralyzed.

He began suffering the disease in his early 20s but went on to establish himself as one of the world’s leading scientific authorities, and has also made guest appearances in “Star Trek” and the cartoons “Futurama” and “The Simpsons.”

Last year he announced he was stepping down as Cambridge University’s Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a position once held by Newton and one he had held since 1979.

“The Grand Design” is due to go on sale next week.

The Telegraph:

The scientist has claimed that no divine force was needed to explain why the Universe was formed.

In his latest book, The Grand Design, an extract of which is published in Eureka magazine in The Times, Hawking said: “Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist.”

He added: “It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the Universe going.”

In A Brief History of Time, Prof Hawking’s most famous work, he did not dismiss the possibility that God had a hand in the creation of the world.

He wrote in the 1988 book: “If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason — for then we should know the mind of God.”

In his new book he rejects Sir Isaac Newton’s theory that the Universe did not spontaneously begin to form but was set in motion by God.

In June this year Prof Hawking told a Channel 4 series that he didn’t believe that a “personal” God existed. He told Genius of Britain: “The question is: is the way the universe began chosen by God for reasons we can’t understand, or was it determined by a law of science? I believe the second. If you like, you can call the laws of science ‘God’, but it wouldn’t be a personal God that you could meet, and ask questions.”

Until his retirement last year Prof Hawking was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, a post previously held by Newton.

The book, co-written by American physicist Leonard Mlodinow, is published on September 9.

Well, I guess I can kind of understand his anger at God.

    • josephus

      That’s funny.
I’ve always thought that Hawking outliving all expectations of ALS was, in fact, the result of God wanting to keep him around so we could learn more about His handiwork.

If that’s the case and I’m God, I’m a little disappointed.

Question: Where did the initial bundle of energy required to power the Big Bang and support forces such as cravity originate?

I’m no theoretical physicist, but it seems to me that energy and matter cannot come from nothing.

    • Sentinel at the Gate

Early studies by John Dalton and later by Albert Einstein fully support the issue that matter can neither be created nor destroyed.

As such, where did matter (and energy) come from? It certainly didn’t originate from Hawking’s ass, did it?

““Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist,” Hawking writes.”

So, who created the law of gravity, Mr. Smarty-Pants?!

    • josephus

You have to conclude in God.
Before the Big Bang…there was what? Was it the leak of energy from a neighboring universe? OK, where did that universe come from. Where did the energy come from?

You can sit there like a child and ask: But how? Over and over and over again and they have no scientific answer for this.

For me, personally, someone who watches a ton of science shows. I believe the fabric of the universe is like a piece of paper. When things get too heavy — like a neutron star — they can stretch and eventually tear that fabric. And as they pull matter through those holes, at some point a bubble forms and eventually breaks off into another universe.

The matter and energy had to come from somewhere at some point. That is God. But we are surrounded by bubbles of universes that are being spun off and created all the time. What those bubbles live inside of, is anyone’s guess. Could be a giant bottle of beer, who knows.

    • CookeMD

It seems that many of these “geniuses” are almost too smart. Or maybe, I’m just too stupid. I agree with Albert on this one. If I place nothing in a vacuum, what are the odds that something will come from that nothing? Not too high. My vote is for a Creator. And, no, I’m pretty sure matter and energy didn’t come from Hawking’s ass. Ha!

Man WTF he used to be Apolitical, now he has been moving left since 2001.

Now David Deutch (Hes British) thats a pretty good. I came across him after reading Michael Crichtons book: Timeline, apperantly alot of the Sci-Fi in Timeline was used as research from Davids book Fabric of Time, I bought it and read it.

I saw a lecture he gave a while back online. David says “What is the most common site in the Universe?”, No one answers. He than turn the lights out, It goes pitch black in the auditorium and he says “This is the most common site, nothing, its that big.”

He is also more conservative than his collegues, Kaku and Hawking.

Theoretical Physicist–I left that out after– “thats a pretty good…

And who’s to say God did not create the whole fucking mess tyrd brain. My God, the fact that there are other stars with planets revolving them is proof of nothing or everything… We’ll know when we know, but I have this funny feeling as humans, including Hawking, we’ll never know for sure… A little Faith is the grand design I think…

He’ll be in for one hell of a surprise

There had to be a beginning. If it all started from a giant Hydrogen cloud, then how did the cloud get there?

He believes that life in all it’s myriad complexity here on earth, came from non living chemicals. Brilliant!!!! The non thinking, God hating zombies erupt in applause!!!

Hawking has changed dramatically over the years. I used to really admire him, and his books “A Brief History of Time” and “The Theory of Everything” were brilliant in their simplicity – explaining quantum physics in layman’s terms. It seems, however, that as the years passed, he got more and more bitter. I attanded a lecture he gave in the early 90s where he made a joke about his speech computer’s “American accent”. In 2002(ish) I saw him on TV making the same point, but not in the good-natured way from the 90s. I think his change was not so much a product of disability as it was a result of the “serious” physics community marginalizing his work. I have read many articles and books where Hawking was dismissed and derided by (in my opinion) lesser minds. Maybe he decided “if he can’t beat’em, join’em”. Or maybe he just became a bitter old asshole, like George Carlin did the last 10 years or so of his life.

    • Professor Bill

I personally think he has become bitter and disillusioned with he experience in this life. I’m sure his disability has weighed heavy on him in it’s unrelenting nature and the thought of dying and simply ceasing to be after this painful existence would leave most people bitter. I’m not at all surprised by it. The athiest has nothing to look forward to and at the end of their life what was it good for? Altruism as a motivation is an empty illogical mirage.

So the natural law of cause-and-effect no longer applies? Twenty years ago, when I was walking around saying “shit happens” I had no idea I was on the cutting edge of physics.

      And what would God say?

  • http://hyperinflation-watch.blogspot.com/ ZenDraken

It takes a lot of faith (of some kind) to believe there is no God.

In fairness, Hawking didn’t say God doesn’t exist, just that God isn’t necessary for the Big Bang.

  • Metalmarine825

In my short 25 years, despite everywhere I’ve been and all I’ve seen, I’ve never seen anything that makes me beieve, or disbelive in god. I always rationalized though that if there was a god, then science is just about finding out how god works, not proving or disproving him. I think thats what Hawking meant by “….for then we should know the mind of God.”

  • ji

I think Hawking is pushing the old physics.

The newer way of thinking about physics, doesnt even include Hawking in their discussions.
When you are forced to see things one way (disabled in a wheelchair) your way of thinking will be one way.
He has no way of finding alternative data.
The key word is THEORY. Theories are guesses.
The theory of Relativity has been debunked long ago.

    • DocOne

While I don’t agree with Mr. Hawking, your staement that the theory of relativity was debunked long ago is entirely false. There has been no debunking
(or proving for that matter, of said theory). Faith is one thing, outright lies and conjecture is another.

  • AZPatriot

    Hi ummm who are you?

I’m God Steven … Steven Hawking is it not?

Alright, what hippie chick got to him.

He’s losing it in his old age, like Goldwater did.

A liberal chick rubs a tit up against an old fella and he starts denying the existence of God and such just so he can have delusions of grandeur about hittin it once again.

  • Gary in Midwest

Explain empathy and charity in exclusively secular world.

  • Richmond

It’s funny how many people listen to him and believe these lies. One thing u Have to understand is the Devil will always finance a lie. How are u part of creation and try to explain creation. Ur not all knowing ur just an observer. Nd we were created with commensence to know that something does not exist without nothing. The law of gravity is law because it was spoking out of the mouth of a king(God) and watever he says is law. Now y should u try to define it. on the other hand his concepts on life are different from many because one he is paralized from head to toe. That effects the way he views life wich is meaningless. Wich lead to he conclusions. Life is meaningless but the bible gave it meaning. And the bible is the truth. And it say u shall know the truth and the truth will set u free. This work is just one of the ways the devil decieves people…..thing about it

if there is no god but if there is a god he will be the smartest man in hell fire

  • http://adlfj.com SSaloam5

    gravity is a physical law.
a law is imposed by a authority.
a authority is something or someone who has total power.
    see the equation.
Mr. Hawkings who then created the LAW of Gravity.
And whoever created the Law of Gravity.
We know causality is true because we bring it to all our experience, rather than our experience bringing it to us. It is like wearing yellow-tinted glasses, everything looks yellow not because of anything out there in the world, but because of the glasses through which we are looking at everything. The contention that this is just an assumption is not true because without causality we would not be able to have the concept of an external reality. Take the following example into consideration; imagine you are looking at the White House in Washington DC. Your eyes may wonder to the door, across the pillars, then to the roof and finally over to the front lawn. Now contrast this to another experience, you are on the river Thames in London and you see a boat floating past. What dictates the order in which you had these experiences? When you looked at the White House you had a choice to see the door first and then the pillars and so on. However with the boat you had no choice as the front of the boat was the first to appear.

The point to take here is that you would not have been able to make the distinction that some experiences are ordered by yourself and others are ordered independently, unless we had the concept of causality. In absence of causality our experience would be very different from the way it is. It would be a single sequence of experiences only: one thing after another.

You may be wondering how this relate to God’s existence. Well, if spontaneous creation from nothing was true and that causality did not make sense in the quantum vacuum, then from a scientific perspective God could be out of the picture. But since causality is true and spontaneous creation out of nothing is false, then we have a strong argument for the existence of God. Take the following premises into account,

    1. Whatever begins to exist has a cause
    2. The universe began to exist
    3. Therefore the universe has a cause

Since premises 1 and 2 are true, it logically follows that premise 3 is true. Everything that begins to exist has a cause, the universe began to exist, therefore the universe must also have a cause. However, to believe that this cause is God can be perceived as a leap of faith rather than a rational conclusion, because this cause could have been a mechanical cause or necessary pre-existing conditions. In light of this how can we justify that this cause is a transcendent immaterial being?

Using conceptual analysis, we can conclude that it must not be subject to time because it created time. This cause must also be uncaused due to the absurdity of an infinite regress, if the cause of the universe had a cause, and that cause had a cause ad infinitum, then there wouldn’t be a universe to talk about in the first place! The cause of the universe must also be immaterial and beyond matter because it created the universe, and the universe is the sum of all matter. Significantly, this cause must have a will because since this cause is eternal, and it caused a finite effect, in other words the universe, then it must have chosen to do so, and choice indicates the existence of a will. Since this cause has a will it can interact and have relationships with personal agents, like human beings.

This analysis gives good reasons to believe in the Islamic concept of God, as the Qur’an – the book of the Muslims – eloquently summarises these points,

“Say: He is God, the One and Only! God, the Eternal, Absolute; He begets not nor is He begotten. And there is none like unto Him.”

If he’s the world’s smartest man in the world, why then can he not invest all his time and energy on discovering a cure for his ALS instead of wasting his whole life disproving God’s existance?

If the universe was created by gravity, then what created gravity? God. Now people could ask, Well then what created God? But if there is a God (which I believe there is), God wasn’t created, he (in description of the Bible) has always existed, extists, and will forever exist. Then, people could ask, Well what if the universe has always existed? Well, people like Stephen, have found that the universe was created, and that it didn’t always exist. That is why I believe there is a God (scientifically speaking.)
