TUCSON – A border patrol officer who admitted to kicking, punching and striking a Mexican national in Nogales in 2006 was sentenced yesterday in U.S. District Court.
Edward C. Moreno, 41, pleaded guilty in June to depriving the civil rights of Mexican national. He was sentenced to 12 months supervised release, four months house arrest, and restitution of $1,392.25 for medical expenses.
According to a release from the U.S. Department of Justice, Moreno admitted that while on duty and escorting the victim around the Border Patrol Processing Center in Nogales, he kicked him, struck him in the stomach with a baton, threw him to the ground and punched him without any legitimate reason to use force.
“This sentence should remind law enforcement officers throughout Arizona: a badge is not immunity from the very laws one has sworn to uphold,” said U.S. Attorney Dennis K. Burke.
“The overwhelming majority of Arizona’s law enforcement are honest, hardworking, and trustworthy individuals who would never consider engaging in any form of criminal behavior. But, in the rare and regrettable circumstance where a sworn officer crosses the line into criminal conduct and violates their oath and the public’s trust, they will be brought to justice,” Burke said.
