Trucker Has Heart Attack, Crashes Into 8 Successive Cars

The driver of a semitruck involved in an eight-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon on the 405 Freeway in West Los Angeles has died, authorities said.

William Bradfield, 58, of Huntington Beach is believed to have suffered a heart attack while behind the wheel of his big rig.

Bradfield was northbound on the 405 about 4:30 p.m. when he lost control near National Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol. The truck collided with several other vehicles before it came to a stop at Santa Monica Boulevard.

Bradfield was treated by paramedics at the scene, then taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Other people involved in the pile-up suffered minor to moderate injuries, police said.

The northbound lanes of the freeway were reopened about 90 minutes after the crash.

    being that it is California, it won’t surprise me if one of the people in the accident tries to sue…someone, somewhere, somehow

    I almost rolled an 18-wheeler, fully loaded, when I worked in the oilfield in Utah. Real muddy day. And it’s a scary feeling when your front tires have the traction of a pizza cutter on ice. And I had tire chains on too. :shock:

    I work for a large ready-mix co. in SoCal. Much like most trucking companies, all they care about is selling concrete. Safety issues just interfere with their main objective, money. Truck drivers are often forced to work long hrs. with little downtime, but if an accident happens, they’ll take the position that the driver was “negligent”. Even though they’re the ones who require comm. drivers to work these hours, when something happens, they just step back and let the driver be crucified. D.O.T. needs to re-structure the on duty time limits to make it safer to drive OTR.
