NOGALES – New audio tapes released by Attorney General Terry Goddard have brought even more attention to the arrest of Nogales Mayor Octovia Garcia-Von Borstel.
The AG said you can hear the Mayor discussing a money deposit with a contractor as well how they can help each other.
The first audio recording is from a meeting the mayor had with towing contractor Ron Henderson.
Henderson asks the Mayor to put a good word in for him in regards to the city’s trash trucks. The mayor said, “Let me see what I can do. Like I said outside the city I can help you but – make it to Allied Policy Group.” Henderson responded, “Allied Policy Group?” Von Borstel responded, “Yea.”
Allied Policy Group is the company Von Borstel is accused of running illegally.
A few weeks later the FBI recorded a phone conversation between the two, about helping each other.
Henderson said, “Hey thanks for the PD’s going well. My contract with them, that’s extremely well I want to say thanks for helping me out and watching my back a great deal.” Von Borstel responded, “No problem we have to watch each other’s backs.”
Another conversation discusses money and mentions his father’s involvement.
Henderson asks the mayor if he can meet at 7:30 by himself. Von Borstel responded, “I need to send my dad because I’m out of town so is that ok if he meets you at 7:30 so you can give the check.” Henderson then said, “I’m not comfortable with somebody else.” Von Borstel responded, “Ok what about Saturday.”
We took the transcript of the tapes, and the audio to the people of Nogales. One resident said, “It’s just obvious. There’s no way you can misunderstand this conversation. They’re not talking in any kinds of codes. He’s just being direct and he cuts to the point telling him what he wants.”
