Big Boost for Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal: Scott Brown

Dec 16, 2010 19 Comments ›› Pat Dollard

ABC News:

Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown today voiced his support for a stand-alone repeal of the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, bringing the bill one vote over the 60-vote threshold that it will need to reach if and when the Senate votes on the measure in the coming weeks.

“Sen. Brown accepts the Pentagon’s recommendation to repeal the policy after proper preparations have been completed. If and when a clean repeal bill comes up for a vote, he will support it,” said Brown spokesperson Gail Gitcho.

Brown’s backing means that – on paper – supporters of the repeal have 61 senators in favor of the bill. On Wednesday Republicans Olympia Snowe of Maine and Lisa Murkowski both announced their support for the stand-alone repeal. The House passed the clean repeal on Wednesday and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has vowed to bring it to a vote in the Senate before the end of the year.

However, Reid has warned that bringing the bill to a vote in the Senate is not an issue of support, but rather of time. With just over a week before Christmas, the Senate is only now kicking off debate on the START nuclear treaty and a massive $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill. It will likely be early next week before the Senate wraps up work on those two measures – and numerous GOP senators have voiced stern opposition to both bills, preferring instead to fund the government into early next year and go home for the holidays. That leaves little time for the Senate to pass the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell repeal.

“The time for action is now. We plan on considering the stand-alone bill to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ which was sent over by the House,” Reid said in a statement on Wednesday night. “But let me be clear. We are very quickly running out of days in this Congress. The time for week-long negotiations on amendments and requests for days of debate is over. Republican Senators who favor repealing this discriminatory policy need to join with us now to stand against those who are trying to run out the clock on this Congress.”

Last week Reid brought the repeal – attached to the annual defense authorization bill – to a vote in the Senate, but it failed by three votes. At that time, Snowe, Murkowski, and Brown all voted against the measure on procedural grounds, arguing that more time should have been provided for amendments and debate.

Now, if the repeal is to pass, Reid has made clear that it will have to be done quickly and Republican supporters of repeal will have to put aside their desires for more time and debate on the bill.

All Democrats except for Sen. Joe Manchin, D-WV, support repeal, so Democrats have 57 votes on that side of the aisle. Four Republicans also support repeal: Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, who has led the charge for the stand-alone bill, plus Brown, Snowe, and Murkowski. On paper, that is 61.

The Senate’s last-ditch effort to pass the repeal comes at a crucial time, since with Republicans taking control of the House and gaining seats in the Senate when the new Congress kicks off in January, the repeal might not come up again for years.

They control food, education, healthcare, banks, the military is the last piece to obtain, and they are working hard at it.

You are right. Repeal of DADT is intended to change the military from being a reservoir of traditional values. To implement acceptance of gays in the military, Admiral Mullen has testified, will take re-education. That re-education is flatly contrary to traditional religious belief that treats homosexuality as sinful. Leftists view sensitivity training as a way to propandize for their agenda, never mind that it has nothing to do with and is a distraction from the mission of the military.

All of this is to say that Scott Brown is being a short-sighted ass.

Brown is being political here. It is just that it is wrong. Brown is showing himself to be a JAG attorney. Combat guys won’t do this.

As I have stated before my family and I worked hard for this commie to go to the senate. What a waste of our time and effort. This homo lover will never be elected again. He is the average Masshole all talk and no substance. Another fucking lawyer in d.c. Never will I ever vote for a lawyer again.

Sad to think about the excitement this clown generated for conservatives. We need a better system of vetting unknowns.

Give me a break guys. DADT is the equivalency of closing ones eyes and believing the bad man will go away. It’s childish at best. I served in the most confining assignment , subs, and with the most elite warriors, SEAL’s, and it was clear that both commands had gays within their ranks. The sailors in question were low key about their preferences and were the epitome of professionalism and patriotism. IMHO anyone who wants to faithfully serve our nation and is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice should not be disallowed to do so based upon sexual preferences. Yes if DADT is repealed their will be a painful transition that will be overcome by and large, assuming the gay service members remain professional and low key, not flamboyant fools.
I served during a time of relative peace but have been an LEO for the past 23 years and have been in shootings and can attest to the fact when the shit hits the fan the last thing I care about is whether or not my fellow officer is gay but whether he or she is there for me.

Were you in the same Navy that I was? Right out of AT school, I was posted to a squadron in San Diego. While getting ready for my first liberty there, a group of swabs asked me if I want to go ashore and “roll some queers”. I didn’t go, but they were serious, and when we got back to quarters, I heard the stories. “Shoulda seen that little cocksucker squeal.”

If there were any “gays” in the squadron, or the Navy for that matter, they sure kept it quiet. But, now, if this repeal goes through, what percentage of the pavers of the chocolate highway will flaunt their perversion and make life hell for the warriors? This isn’t good. This is a monumental mistake and will do nothing but further embolden the Hadjis. As you know, they have no use for fags.

“Yes if DADT is repealed their will be a painful transition that will be overcome by and large, assuming the gay service members remain professional and low key, not flamboyant fools.”
Achilles, that is a big assumption to make, especially considering that until now, their “flamboyance” was illegal… now they have been empowered, like everywhere else in society, to begin accusations and witch hunts against every little perceived slight by someone else. When careers are on the line, that is a tremendous power to give, and gays use it frequently as a battering ram. :???:

Homosexual butt-fuckers, cock-suckers, fisters, felchers and ass-rimmers are now allowed to openly serve in the United States military. However, they are still subject to Art. 125, UCMJ. Nevertheless, the last american institution with any hope of reversing the internal destruction of Historic American morality and values is now hopelessly compromised. All because good men continue to do nothing.
I am now further disgusted with my generation of military leadership who hold squarley upon their shoulders the full burden of INACTION and COWARDICE in the face of a known domestic enemy intent on the purposefull demise of our representative republic.
