DOS ATTACK MANIA! – MONDAY UPDATE

MONDAY UPDATE: My webmaster, Chad Coleman of Frontier Web Design, has come up with a new fax to beat back the spam attack, and so far, it seems to be working quite well. We’ll be keeping a close eye on things over the next 24 hours.

UPDATE: Shortly after coming back online, we are again under attack, as the site is still painfully slow to load as I’m sure you are noticing. Hopefully, we can keep it from going down again. The spam is coming in at mega-multiples PER SECOND. I’m doing all I can, with limited time and resources, as this is a crucial couple weeks for SAFE work. I’m gonna move into Plan B in the morning.

You may have all noticed that the site has been painfully slow to load, and getting worse, for two weeks. We discovered an ongoing series of DOS spam attacks, which finally shut the site down on Wednesday. It couldn’t have happened at a worse week, as I had to travel to both California and Texas on SAFE business, leaving my time and internet access to handle this as very limited, and catch as catch can. Interestingly, the attacks came as we were initiating the fundraising process for SAFE; apparently, there are forces determined to cut off SAFE’s cash flow, and prevent it from succeeding. I’ve been able to put in place a temp fix, until a more permanent one is done by Tuesday. Unfortunately, this is going to include a text verification system for comments to add extra protection against the spam.

In any event, things did advance splendidly on the SAFE front, although the expansion is going to require sufficient capital. If any of you can please help close out the current fundraiser for the patrol base, that would be most helpful. We’ve a big mission ahead, and we’re gonna get it done.

    I am more concerned about someone tracking down the people and distributing their information far and wide for general consumption than seeing the site back up.

    too bad someone couldn’t figure out a way of getting ahold of the hacker that is on our side. “Jester” or “The Jester” – he has been profiled by the FBI as ex- military, from the USA, and has attacked hundreds of terrorist websites & servers including Wikileaks.

    If your looking for fire power – that guy is it.

    Pat,
    you should list as much information on the attack as to build a profile and i.e. finger print the attackers. There are enough of us in the service who know how to ID these things and react to help or id where the DDOS is is coming from in a profile of attack. DDOS uses Zombies and new programs can act as Zombies but seriously you need to establish mirror sites a FOB away from the COP eh!
