US Fires Tomahawk into Libya

March 19th, 2011 (28) Posted By Pat Dollard.

Cairo/Washington: The US and UK have launched Tomahawk missiles on Libyan defence targets in Tripoli and along the Mediterranean coast, shortly after French warplanes flew over Benghazi to enforce the no-fly zone in the strife-torn African nation.

More than 110 Tomahawk missiles, fired from American and British ships and submarines, hit about 20 Libyan air and missile defence targets, US Navy Vice Adm William Gortney said at a Pentagon briefing.

“Coalition forces have launched ‘Operation Odyssey Dawn’ to enforce UN Security Council Resolution 1973, which protects the Libyan people from their ruler (Muammar Gaddafi),” Gortney said.

US military forces are on the leading edge of the coalition operation, taking out Libya’s integrated air and missile defence system. “The ordnance is aimed at radars and anti-aircraft sites around the capital of Tripoli and other facilities along the Mediterranean coast,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

The US will conduct a damage assessment of the sites, which include SA-5 missiles and communications facilities.

Earlier, French warplanes reportedly have hit four tanks used by the Gaddafi’s forces on the outskirts of the opposition stronghold of Benghazi, on a day when opposition fighters in the city came under constant artillery and mortar fire.

However, Libyan state television reported civilian targets in Tripoli had been bombarded, as well as fuel stores in Misurata. The state news agency reported that there had been “civilian casualties as a result of this aggression”.

The action by coalition forces came after their leaders approved military strikes against Gaddafi’s forces.

“Today I authorised the Armed Forces of the United States to begin a limited military action in Libya in support of an international effort to protect Libyan civilians. That action has now begun,” US President Barack Obama said in Brasilia.

In London, British Prime Minister David Cameron said British forces were in action over Libya. “What we are doing is necessary, it is legal and it is right… I believe we should not stand aside while this dictator murders his own people.”

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, earlier, noted his country’s warplanes are already targeting Gaddafi’s forces.

Meanwhile, in a brief statement on state television, Gaddafi said the air strikes marked the beginning of another “crusade”, adding that the Mediterranean and North Africa were being turned into a “battleground”.

He said that arms depots should be opened so that Libyans may defend themselves, Al Jazeera reported.

While, Mohammad al-Zawi, the secretary-general of the Libyan parliament, said his country was facing a “barbaric” attack, and reiterated that Libyan forces had been observing a “ceasefire”.

While one should applaud France’s Sarkozy for resolute action, it is embarrassing to see such a lamentable lack of leadership by the United States.

While world burns, Obummer is partying in Brazil supporting his buddy Soros, who he gave 2 million in stimulus to drill for oil-Petrobas is one of Soros’s company.
Wag the dog would be a better analysis of Obummer’s actions, a kid attempting to play in a grown-up world.

….another Jimmy (Peanut Farmer) Carter! Gas prices rising! Another Middle East Incident where too little and probably too late military! Inflation Jumping thru the roof! And President that cannot lead a Johnny Detail…and he is partying in South America while the world is burning?!! We are now the biggest laughing stock in the world!

and he will probably win re-election because there is no ‘Reagan’ for America to rely on in 2011.

    • Phil Byler

I think, Average Joe that is what is bothering a lot of us.

Who fits the Reagan’s shoes best? I don’t think Romney. Gingrich? Gingrich does understand the Reagan legacy well, but there seem to be negatives weighing him down. Palin? Reagan had been around a long time; it took three times before he won (1968, 1976, 1980).

About 2 weeks ago….AP,Reuters, & BBC all stated that “democracy” was a push for sharia by Al Qaeda guys in Libya and Muslim Brotherhood, and they had VIRTUALLY ALL leadership positions there as the “rebels” & boots on the ground from Egypt & Iran.

When they come to power after Gadhafi is gone, will someone from here start the case for real of removing the traitor in the black house?????????

  • idi amin dada

    So it begins.

Lets see if this can of worms called a “coalition” can be managed any better than the past ME conflicts.

I pray for the US and other pilot’s safety.

It appears that interfering in fraudulently institgated foreign civil wars only matters to the EU when their oil interests are at stake…oh, the irony – ho hum.

Obama’s job to undermine and reduce the US’s role in the world yet again, is finished for this task..For this week..He is out of country recieving a pat on the back from his sugar daddy soros, and further instructions for the next un-challenged effort to burn “the west” to the ground.. We are done for in 2012 if DoJ, SCOTUS, and Congress does not see what evil lurks..yes, even for them too. Helloooooooooooo!..

That was was so disappointing with Fred Thompson, he talked-the-talk, and walked-a-bit……but never really tried to get the nomination, just faked it.

There must be SOMEONE NOW to start saying he will charge Obama with treason if elected, that he will charge ALL DEMOCRATS who support SEIU, ACORN, AL-CIO with Treason.

They would win in a landslide!

    • trustme1013

Okay, Topgun, it’s ‘not’ true the French got there first.

For the rest of the class, the French got there first, and Obama was in South America with his pants down, where the whole world saw first-hand how he’s a pussy.
      http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/19/world/africa/19europe.html

Read it and weep. France, and Sark, have the balls we wish we’d elected.

    • http://patdollard.com Average Joe

Some where I had heard that the French were re-arming BOTH sides. Yep, their win-win for Fwench…….and Euro.

It is like the “Looney Tunes” cartoon with Dog & Foghorn Leghorn… The one with Daffy Duck as Ace Novelty Company salesman selling both of them gags and all.

I’m gonna make a prediction. It sounds crazy, but here it goes. I think hillary MAY turn conservative.
      Here are my reasons:
      1. The feminists turned their backs on her during the 2008 election. ( they had obama fever, and were nasty towards her. They called Ferraro a racist and she was campaining for hillary.)
      2. From the outside looking in, it appears that the whole Libya mess was thrown in her lap. If it goes well, obama will take the credit. If not she will get the blame.
      3. She comes from a conservative family, she campaigned for Goldwater. Then hit college and became a femme nazi
      4. Bill and her like to be the center of attention. Obama took that away from them. She thought she had the ’08 nomination in the bag.
Am I crazy? If she did, would anyone support her? I don’t know. I REALLY have a strong dislike (almost hate)towards her.

    • trustme1013

      @Amy:

If Hill runs, it will have to be as a 3rd party. There’s no way the MSM is going to endorse her for the Dems, and she won’t have the black vote, no matter how black Bill is.

She would have to Perot it, and in doing so, my hope is that she would allow someone who should really be wearing pants win. She could *definitely* be President, I just don’t like the Clinton style of doing things.

The outcome of this military intervention may be similar to that after the Falklands war when the British Prime minister gained more popularity as a result of successful handling of the situation and was later re-elected into the second term.
