Fire hoses would not only have been more humane, but also more effective. Still, this tactic should have been a last resort. Otherwise, all a government accomplishes is to further alienate itself from its own people – eventually to the point of losing all legitimacy in their eyes. Sometimes, there needs to be a show of force, but it can backfire and actually have the opposite effect.
