Huntsman Enters 2012 White House Race

Reuter:

Republican Jon Huntsman, President Barack Obama’s former ambassador to China, entered his party’s 2012 presidential race on Tuesday pledging to make the “hard decisions” to deal with America’s debt.

“I’m a candidate for the office of President of the United States of America,” Huntsman told supporters at Liberty State Park in New Jersey, with the Statue of Liberty in the background. The site is where former President Ronald Reagan launched his bid for the White House in 1980.

“For the first time in our history, we are passing down to the next generation a country that is less powerful, less compassionate, less competitive and less confident than the one we got,” Huntsman said. “This, ladies and gentlemen, is totally unacceptable and totally un-American.”

Huntsman, 51, is one of the few Republican hopefuls who worries Obama’s re-election team. Fluent in Mandarin Chinese, he upset the White House in April by quitting his job as ambassador in Beijing, a post he held since 2009, to return to home to plan his election campaign.

If he picks up traction in opinion polls, Huntsman could be a rival to former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney for the role of the moderate Republican candidate.

Huntsman called for “broad and bold” changes to tax laws and regulations and said America should seek energy independence and boost job creation, but gave no specifics on his plans.

“We must make hard decisions that are necessary to avert disaster,” the former Utah governor said, painting a bleak picture of what it would mean for the country if it does not reduce its debt load.

“If we don’t, in less than a decade, every dollar of federal revenue will go to covering the costs of Medicare, Social Security and interest payments on our debt. Meanwhile, we’ll sink deeper into debt for everything else – from national security to disaster relief,” Huntsman said.

Congressional Republicans and Democrats are debating how to bring down the deficit and reduce federal spending. But those talks have made investors worldwide jittery as it raises the specter, however small, of a debt default.

Standard and Poor’s said on Tuesday that the risks of the United States losing its prized triple-A rating over the medium term have increased as the country faces a political impasse and nears its debt ceiling. Fitch ratings also said on Tuesday that it saw risks of a debt default in the United States.

The Obama administration has warned it will run out of money to pay bills if Congress does not raise the $14.3 trillion debt limit by August 2 — a prospect that could push the country back into recession and upend financial markets.

Huntsman said he tackled many of the same issues in Utah and managed to keep the state’s AAA credit rating.

A campaign video show on Tuesday characterized Huntsman as a different candidate — a man who dropped out of high school to play in a rock band and who can speak Chinese, who prefers a greasy spoon diner to a fancy restaurant.

“Decent, calm, firm, and disciplined. No drama,” the video declares. “This guy is different.”

Another RINO in love with himself.

Here in Utah he is looked at a bit quizzically, if not with disdain.

He was elected governor here because he ran as a Republican, using his inherited wealth and name to beat out other Republican candidates in the primary. The primary is the real election, because in a state as conservative as Utah, no Democrat can win the governorship.

His father is greatly respected and a devout member of the LDS (Mormon) church. When Hunstman was asked if he was still a member of the Mormon church, his answer is that membership is “tough to define.” Which, of course, is nonsense. Any person who marginalizes his own church and background for political expediency cannot be trusted to hold strong to any set of principles – a la Obama.

By the way, regarding his ambassadorship to China, he only knows Chinese because he served a two-year LDS church mission to Taiwan – same church he now regards with insolence. Bah. Get out of here.

    Run Perry run.

What a pathetic attempt to launch his campaign in the place Reagan did, as if he has any mentality or political standards even close to Reagan   This was excellently illustrated by Rush today as he played Reagan’s actual speech the day he began his campaign there – no mealy mouthed nonsense about the sitting president – he took Jimmah Cahta’s record by the balls, swung it around the room, and tossed it out the door    Best quote – “A recession is when you lose your job – it will be over when Jimmy Carter loses his job”   This clown is no Reagan. :???:

    Obama’s Perot

Huntsman is an Obama collaborator. Expect a primary of mudslinging at GOPers and nerf balls at 0bama, followed if his boss needs it by the full Perot.

Huntsman and Mitt appeal to the same squishy Rino voters. If Huntsman can peel off Mitt votes, then I say “Run Huntsman Run.”

Let the Rinos fight it out.

Just found out that there is bad blood between the Huntsmans and Mittens.

Mitt beat out Huntsman for the Salt Lake City Olympics chairmanship in 2002.

Good. Last Rino left standing, please shut the lights.

Another mealy, wimpy, RINO creep. I am insulted that he picked Reagan’s site, that alone is enough for me to tell him to get lost.
