UPDATE 12 7/23 05:20 PST:
This morning, police official Roger Andresen revealed the total death toll had escalated to 91.
He said suspect Breivik was co-operating with investigators, adding: “He is clear on the point that he wants to explain himself.”
National police chief Sveinung Sponheim said the gunman’s internet postings “suggest that he has some political traits directed toward the right, and anti-Muslim views, but whether that was a motivation for the actual act remains to be seen.”
Andersen said the suspect posted on websites with Christian fundamentalist tendencies.
A police official said the suspect appears to have acted alone in both attacks, and that “it seems like this is not linked to any international terrorist organizations at all”.
He also names “Dexter”, a Showtime series about a serial killer, as his favorite TV programme.
Bizarrely he lists cartoon “He-Man” among his choice watches as well as violent films “Gladiator” and “300″.
A pal said he ranted on anti-Islam websites and was “strongly opposed to multiculturalism”.
Breivik is said to have had a machine gun and a Glock pistol registered in his name. And as boss of farming firm Breivik Geofarm, he would have had access to fertiliser for a bomb.
On a Twitter page set up under his name, there is just one message posted on July 17.
It says: “One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100,000 who have only interests.”
“He makes it clear that he believes the media have failed by not being “NOK” Islam-critical.”
Coincidentally, and providing context of the situation in Norway in which this heinous attack has occurred, here is an article posted earlier today, before the attacks were announced, on Andrew Breitbart’s national security website Big Peace detailing the rampant rape of Norwegian women by muslim immigrants in Norway:

Police searched what is believed to be the shooter’s house on Oslo’s west side
UPDATE 11, 17:00 PST:
From Politicons, a Conservative Political Blog:
This man is reportedly responsible for the Utoya terror attacks:
32 year-old Anders Behring Breivik, the man who shot at children on Utoya island in Norway. This photo is from his Facebook page.
His Facebook page reveals that he is from Oslo, Norway and is a Christian Norwegian Conservative.
Mail Online reported:
The 32-year-old Norwegian man arrested for gunning down children on the holiday island of Utoya has been named locally as Anders Behring Breivik.
Described as 6ft tall and blond, he is reported to have arrived on the island of Utoya and opened fire after beckoning several young people over in his native Norwegian tongue.
Reports suggest he was also seen loitering around the site of the bomb blast in Oslo two hours before the island incident – and also before the capital’s explosion.
UPDATE: The gunman reportedly had his own company, dealing with geo-farming, which would explain access to explosives.
We’ve removed photos of his family.
UPDATE: He has a Twitter account here. He has only one tweet that reads: One person with a belief is equal to the force of 100, 000 who have only interests.
A Wikipedia page has been created about him.
UPDATE: According to Norwegian broadcaster TV… Breivik is a freemason.
UPDATE: vg.no reports: In online debates he makes his mark as a well-read, and one with strong opinions about Norwegian politics. He promotes a very conservative opinions, which he also called nationalist. He expresses himself strongly opposed to multiculturalism – that cultural differences can live together in a community. In one of the posts he states that politics today no longer revolves around socialism against capitalism, but that the fight is between nationalism and internationalism. He expressed clear support for the nationalist mindset. He also commented on the Swedish news articles, where he makes it clear that he believes the media have failed by not being “NOK” Islam-critical.

UPDATE 10, 14: 46: The Norwegian justice minister has just confirmed the suspect arrested today at the youth camp in Utoeya was Norwegian. Body count reaches 17 Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg spoke at a press conference in Oslo. “We will find the guilty and hold them responsible,” he says. “No one will bomb us to silence. No one wil shoot us to silence. No one will ever scare us away from being Norway,” Mr Stoltenberg says. “You will not destroy us. You will not destroy our democracy or our ideals for a better world,” Prime Minister Stolenberg adds. .
UPDATE 9, 14:08: A “blonde haired, blue-eyed man” who was seen earlier in the day, and is custody in Oslo, has been identified by witness as the shooter at the youth rally massacre, as reported by Norway’s state media NRK. On the face of it, this would tend to make the attacks seem to be a more of a domestic nature as opposed to one of Islamic terrorism, however, it is not unknown for Al Qaeda to successfully recruit from within a nation’s native population, and a terrorist group known as Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or “Helpers of the Global Jihad” has released a statement claiming responsibility for the attacks. There is simply no way to know, one way or the other at this point. Current aggregate body count from both scenes is 16. The Prime Minister has given a speech, the video will be up here shortly. UPDATE 8 11:52 : An eyewitness at the scene of the massacre at the youth camp. A Mr. Andre Scheie, has told state Norwegian state television NRK that he saw “20-25 bodies, including bodies of children shot on the shore” who were attempting to jump into the sea and swim back to the mainland to escape the terror-killer. Mr Scheie also said he saw people dead in the water.
At this point this looks very likely to be an Al Qaeda attack ordered by Al Qaeda #2 Ayman Al Zawahiri in retaliation for several things, including the assassination of Osama bin Laden. Al Zawahiri has threatened Norway before. Large car bombs taken against government buildings, and, most especially, the horrific killing of children, are Al Qaeda’s two signatures.
UPDATE 7 10:53: Norwegian police are now saying that they believe the attacks, the bombing and the shooting, were co-ordinated. Eyewitness at the scene of the youth rally shooting on the island of Utoya, where most attendees were 16-17 years old, described the attack as “horrific”, children being shot, screaming, running frenziedly, jumping into water to swim away and escape…repeat, description “He was at shooting at young people, children”. Again, he has been arrested. Answers should soon be forthcoming.
UPDATE 6 10:45: Reuters says police say seven people have been killed and two are badly wounded in the bomb attack downtown.
UPDATE 5 10:19: AFP says the gunman in the shooting on the island of Utoya has been arrested. Reuters is now reporting that “several” people were killed.
UPDATE 4 10:10: Norwegian state broadcaster NRK has caught up with me and now says five people have been injured in the shooting at a Labour Party youth camp on the island of Utoya.
UPDATE 3 09:55: Norwegian police have confirmed that “MANY” were “hit” in the attack on a Labor Party youth camp by a gunman dressed as a policeman. The camp is located on an island outside Oslo. The shooting occurred at a rally of the Prime Minister’s Labor Party youth section, and the Prime Minister was scheduled to speak there tomorrow. Anti-terror police are conducting an ongoing operation on the island now. Developing….
UPDATE 2, 09:23 BREAKING: According to Oslo BBC reporter, Hans Torgenson, and a government official, a gunman dressed as a policeman has attacked a Labour Party youth camp at an island just outside of Oslo. Developing…
“Last week, a Norwegian prosecutor filed terror charges against an Iraqi-born cleric for threatening Norwegian politicians with death if he is deported from the Scandinavian country.”
UPDATE 1 09:17 BBC: BREAKING NEWS Assistant Chief Constable Egil Vrekke of the Oslo Police confirms two people have died.
He says police know there have been “a lot” of casualties but the rescue operation is ongoing. People are still trapped in the buildings. Many witnesses say it was a car bomb, but this has not been confirmed. Norway has received many threats over its involvement in the war in Afghanistan.
OSLO, Norway (AP) – DEVELOPING: A powerful blast tore open several Oslo buildings including the prime minister’s office on Friday. One person was reportedly killed and several were injured, as the blast shattered windows and coated the street with documents.
Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg is safe, government spokeswoman Camilla Ryste told The Associated Press, although it was unclear whether that meant he was uninjured. Norway’s public broadcaster, NRK, said one person was confirmed killed.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the blast. NRK showed video of a blackened car lying on its side amid the debris.
Most of the windows in the 20-floor highrise were blown out, and the bottom floor appeared to be gutted. Nearby offices were also heavily damaged and evacuated, including those housing some of Norway’s leading newspapers and news agency NTB.
Witness Ole Tommy Pedersen was standing at a bus stop about 100 meters from the high-rise at around 3:30 p.m. when the explosion occurred.
“I saw three or four injured people being carried out of the building a few minutes later,” Pedersen told AP.
An AP reporter who was in the NTB office said the building shook from the blast and all employees evacuated as the alarm went off. Down in the street, he saw one person with a bleeding leg being led away from the area.
The government building houses the offices of the prime minister and his administration. Several ministries are in surrounding buildings.
The blast comes as Norway grapples with a homegrown terror plot linked to Al Qaeda. Two suspects are in jail awaiting charges.
Last week, a Norwegian prosecutor filed terror charges against an Iraqi-born cleric for threatening Norwegian politicians with death if he is deported from the Scandinavian country. The indictment centered on statements that Mullah Krekar — the founder of the Kurdish Islamist group Ansar al-Islam — made to various news media, including American network NBC.
Terrorism has also been a concern in neighboring Denmark since an uproar over cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad six years ago. Danish authorities say they have foiled several terror plots linked to the 2005 newspaper cartoons that triggered protests in Muslim countries. Last month, a Danish appeals court on Wednesday sentenced a Somali man to 10 years in prison for breaking into the home of the cartoonist.
