Shock: Herman Cain Upsets Rick Perry In Florida Straw Poll

Fox News:

Businessman Herman Cain won the Florida straw poll Saturday, beating Texas Gov. Rick Perry, the GOP presidential frontrunner who just two days earlier delivered a debate performance that was widely panned.
Cain finished with 37 percent of the vote, while Perry trailed with 15 percent. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney followed with 14 percent while former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum drew 11 percent. U.S. Rep. Ron Paul finished with 10.5 percent, while former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman finished with 2 percent.

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, who won the Iowa straw poll in August, finished with just 1 percent of the vote.

“Thank you to the Republican voters for this incredible honor of being named the winner of the Presidency 5 straw poll in Florida today,” Cain said in a statement after the results were in.

“This is a sign of our growing momentum and my candidacy that cannot be ignored. I will continue to share my message of ‘common sense solutions’ across this country and look forward to spending more time in Florida, a critical state for both the nomination and the general election,” he said.

Perry, who was expected to finish strong had told the more than 3,000 GOP activists who came from across the state that his rivals made a mistake by skipping the straw poll..

Romney and Bachmann had both left Florida before the voting began and their campaigns discounted the straw poll’s role in the campaign.
Other first-tier candidates hadn’t actively organized for the Florida vote, either. So the results probably won’t shuffle the campaign’s standings and were shaping up as little more than a popularity contest among the delegates selected by local party organizations.
Ahead of the test vote, Perry’s campaign bought breakfast for hundreds of the party faithful assembled for a three-day conference and debate. Perry said skipping the straw poll was a blunder.
“I think that’s a big mistake. I think it’s very important,” Perry said, citing its history.

Previous straw polls have predicted the GOP nominee.

Ronald Reagan won in 1979, George H.W. Bush in 1987 and Kansas Sen. Bob Dole in 1995. The Republican Party of Florida, however, has not organized the test vote in recent years.

Perry, a late entrant into the Republican primary who quickly led national polls, stumbled in recent weeks.

His strident defense of in-state tuition rates for illegal immigrants put him on the wrong side of the GOP’s conservative base. His rivals worked to exploit his opposition to a fence along the U.S.-Mexican border and his support of a mandatory vaccine for girls against a sexually transmitted disease.

A Florida poll victory could prove helpful, especially ahead of Friday’s deadline for the latest fundraising snapshot.

From Florida, Perry was headed later Saturday to a Republican gathering on Mackinac Island in Michigan. Romney, the son of a former Michigan governor, also was set to address the crowd in the state where he spent his youth.

Can we talk? Let me just say up-front that I really don’t know much about Herman Cain, other than the Godfather’s Pizza CEO stuff. With that, let me also say that … ummm … I’m getting the funny feeling that Mr Cain represents the “absolutionist” wing of the Republican Party. I mean, c’mon … Mr. Cain has never held public office … people are paying attention to him just because he *is* Black. From a strict conservative view, selecting Mr Cain would be Obama, Part Deux. To nominate Herman Cain would neuter any argument Republicans had that Obama was inexperienced coming into office, which is the cause of our present fiscal dilemma. Mr. Cain is still unknown and untested. While I’m sure he dosen’t curry favor with radical elements, we still don’t know who he aligns himself with, politically. He — as did Obama — has no legislative record. C’mon, people: you just don’t walk off the street and assume the office of the Presidency … the most powerful office in the world (at least, last I checked).

Listen folks; if you want an African American presidential candidate, there’s only one option: Rep. Alan West as a write-in.

You had me agreeing up until you mentioned Allen West. The fact that West voted for Pigford II and remains in the CBC speaks volumes about him and his loyalties.

I agree with all you folks we fuckin need somebody else!! Why in the hell can’t the republican party find somebody normal without some kind of baggage or wacko view?? I think CS is right I like west but think his attitude would change when in power surrounded by his homies. Any of them I have seen sure do.

    • Hawkerdriver

Right on,CS! I,myself have become disappointed in West since he backed down from resigning from the CBC.From Colin Powell on down, there is a point where they will stick with their own kind regardless of what’s at stake.I like Cain, seems genuine, but the black thing worries me..

Shock?  Perry is an open borders Statist. Romney believes in Man Made Global Warming and big state solutions. Bachman is a Congresswoman and has not run anything bigger than her office. Newt is Newt.  Santorum lost a major election and needs to deal with the loser label.  Huntsman is a democrat and does not know it.  Ron Paul is a moonbat who lives in  phantasyland.
Herman is a CEO, a conservative and a warning to the frontrunners.  The MSM has annointed them the front runners…. we haven’t.

Newt is Newt. Don’t forget his TV add with Pelosi on climate change.

ProjectVoteSmart is a non-partisan clearinghouse for political candidates, cataloging their positions, endorsements, biographical intel, and such.
They’re located in the Flint Creek valley, less than 50 miles from me, and are known for being equally annoying to about ALL the political parties, since they don’t play favorites – they just report what they find.

Here’s position papers from Cain – who is in the process of doing their “Issue Positions Test”, apparently:

You can go to their main page and look up what they have on all the other candidates, also.

I like what I’ve seen from Cain so far – and I don’t give a damn what color his hide is, just the color of his politics – but there’s still a long piece to go before November ’12.
