Here’s background on the memorial, plus a wider shot of it, the dictionary definition of the word “desecrate”, and an earlier video shot at the protest.

1. to divest of sacred or hallowed character or office.
2. to divert from a sacred to a profane use or purpose.
3. to treat with sacrilege; profane.

In the center of Lownsdale Square stands the Soldiers’ Monument, Douglas Tilden’s monument to the Oregonians killed in the Spanish-American War. Dedicated on May 31, 1906, the tall granite obelisk is topped with a bronze replica of an infantryman of the Second Oregon U.S. Volunteer Infantry, part of the first large American fighting force ever sent overseas.

It honestly, physically turns my stomach. And this is who Obama thinks is a good idea to align himself with? He such an idiot. These people are out of control. I haven’t seen ONE video, interview or otherwise that made me think ANYONE associated with this movement was doing something worthwhile.

If you’re expecting the MSM to “find” someone that could lend intelligence and a cogent explanation of the OWS movements around the country, you’re gonna be disappointed. Not because there are no such people, but because the MSM doesn’t want to jeopardize their access to the two main political parties…and they’re doing little different that they did in reporting during the infancy of the Taxed Enough Already movement. And from the right, you’re seeing the typical use of the propagandic games using the “scare labels” of the 50s and 60s: leftists, communists, socialists, etc.

The Kool Aid is flowing freely and the mudslinging is in full force.

Hello, I’m a volunteer assisting with media and outreach at Occupy Portland. I’m embarrassed as hell by what has happened with this memorial. The guy in the video is a terrible representation of the respectful and passionate people I’ve met at these public parks.

There is a team of engineering and infrastructure volunteers who are working directly with veterans to ensure the memorial is protected. They’ve produced some rope rigging to hang tarps while keeping the memorial visible and respected. These veterans have served with the Army in Vietnam and the Marines in Operation Iraqi Freedom. I know that other actions and services are represented, but I haven’t had the chance to make friends with these men and women.

The volunteers in charge of signage have been overwhelmed but I’ll make sure they prioritize signage to keep people off of the memorial.

I’m headed straight down to the memorial after work, tonight, to ensure it gets cleaned up and that people around it ensure everybody knows what it means to our citizens. What has happened isn’t acceptable, but I know the residents of Portland admire service and sacrifice for the greater good.

There is no damage to the memorial. It was chalk and volunteers have already removed it with care.
