Um. .In many rural areas Walmart is the only retail store. So if you want toilet paper yeah, they kinda do leave you with no other option. And as for employment, same deal. Where else are you going to work? Oh, and Steve Jobs and Apple is/was was obscenely, filthy rich so I think he/they could have fully afforded to manufacture his crap in the U.S. You don’t have to be a f-cking billionaire.

Like it or not, every time people make a purchase they are voting for what a retailer sells. Walmart sells cheap crap from China because the preponderance of people shopping there buy the cheap crap tool, or the 1/2-full coffee can, etc. and not the American-made Vicegrips or a real full can of coffee. Manufacturing here has a cost, and if that cost is too high versus the competition then you will lose money trying to do it (which makes you stop, or go bankrupt – which also makes you stop). I don’t know anyone who *wants* to manufacture in China – it’s a difficult long-distance relationship and they’ll steal you blind. Check out what happened to Fellowes recently: http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2011/04/how-outsourcing-to-china-cost-fellowes.html
The real root of the problem is that our government has allowed China to undercut our manufacturing through currency manipulation, environmental regulation arbitrage, and IP theft without any consequences. To a large extent it’s because that’s what most consumers here really want – and they have expressed that desire through their actual behavior. Whatever their opinion is about buying American when asked, it apparently usually goes out the window when faced with the choice on the shelf.
