#OccupyWallStreet Attempts To Retake Zucotti Park, Battle With Cops, Pepper Spray, And Arrests Ensue – With Photos

NYTimes:

More than 500 people associated with the Occupy Wall Street movement poured into Zuccotti Park on Saturday night and, in a return to scenes from earlier in the year, the evening began with the sound of drumming and calls of the now familiar slogan, “We are the 99 percent” — and it ended with torn-down barricades and a scuffle with police officers.

Just after 10:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, officers carried a person out of the park, prompting protesters to follow behind them, shouting “Shame!” The reason the person was escorted away was unclear.

About 20 minutes later, a group of protesters grabbed some of the metal barricades that surround the park and began piling them inside. As they gripped the barricades, police officers took hold as well, and a shoving match began, the silver bars trapped in between. At least one police officer fired an arch of pepper spray into the crowd behind those barricades.

Moments later, at least a dozen police officers charged into the park, plowing directly into a crowd of people, some of whom were trying to flee, pushing and shoving. One man was thrown down and pinned to the ground by several officers.

In the park, some protesters shouted “Peaceful!” and “Nonviolent!”

As the scuffle subsided, a group of police officers gathered on Cedar Street.

The evening began more diplomatically.

About 100 people arrived at the park at about 7 p.m., according to witnesses, and someone put up what was described as a small multicolored tent, about two feet tall, made for a child. Two young girls, who were at the park with their mother, began playing inside.

Though the New York City Police Department had officers fanned out throughout the city for the holiday, there were police officers lined up across the street from Zuccotti Park, at the ready alongside private security guards. They stepped in.

Police officers and security guards, who stood at the ready across the street, told protesters to remove the tent, saying it violated rules issued by the park’s owner, Brookfield Properties. Meanwhile, an officer and a guard blocked other protesters, and at least one reporter, from entering the park. Some people disregarded their instructions and squeezed through the spaces between metal barricades along other parts of the perimeter.

According to Brendan Burke, an organizer with the Occupy movement, police and security officers said that if the tent was taken down, people would be permitted to enter. So shortly after 8 p.m., demonstrators dismantled the brightly colored tent and handed it over to security guards. The guards stepped aside, and protesters were allowed in, after their bags were searched.

In the six weeks since officers cleared the park in an overnight raid, a spot in its northeast corner has been cordoned off with bright yellow tape. That corner, with its high granite ledge, is where general assembly meetings were usually held. On Saturday night, the tape was down and the meeting reopened.

At one point, a man stood on the ledge and was ordered down by a security guard.

“You’re fighting a losing battle,” the man answered. “Give me one good reason why I should get down.

As midnight approached, the hundreds in Zuccotti Park shouted “Whose year? Our year!”

I watched this tonight and what you saw I did not.  These are American citizens whose future has been ripped from them by greed and corruption.  No one is a terrorist.  What you want to do is color this movement in the worst possible light.  Young and old are involved.  I don’t need to rattle off the innumerable reasons why; they are well documented in bestselling books and award-winning experts agree.  To sit in the house and do nothing, pretending every day is the same as the next, is a lazy person’s approach to living and deserves servitude and destitution.  Your dividends may keep you from experiencing the demise of the once superpower the USA was, and if that is the case, then you really should leave us alone and consider your lucky – and believe it when it is said it is too good to be true.  Americans are wonderful people and keeping this land free for all is what is taking place here.  I thank them.

Uh, yeah, right.  That’s why millions are employed after the actions of the big banks took down the economy and it had to be rescued by We the People. We the People are now getting screwed no matter what we do while the bankers give themselves huge bonuses. You are truly delusional if you don’t see this.

“What you want to do is color this movement in the worst possible light”. – What ? It’s interesting that you call this debacle a “movement”. It is shit, and you have labeled it as such.

“I don’t need to rattle off the innumerable reasons why “. – Because you can’t.

I think you strung together this entire nonsensical paragraph in some misguided hope that you would sound intellectual and altruistic, when you and your merry band of entitled, unwashed Marxist whores are anything but.

    non sequitur

the Obama administration spedns in 1.5 days what the entire US banking industry makes in profits in 1 entire year. Until you begin demanding OBama to resign, you prove yourself to be nothing more than hypocrites, pawns, hacks and shills

you completely ignore the violence and treasonous behavior perpetrated by the masses of Occutards. A movement cannot be “semi violent.”

Oh, and feel free to prove that these peoples’ livihoods were stolen by greedy people.

    Dear Wendy…

“…To sit in the house and do nothing, pretending every day is the same as
the next, is a lazy person’s approach to living and deserves servitude
and destitution. Your dividends may keep you from experiencing the
demise of the once superpower the USA was, and if that is the case, then
you really should leave us alone and consider your lucky – and believe
it when it is said it is too good to be true.”

I take this statement as a personal insult…You know nothing about me…You are full of Bullshit!

If you think what these #Occupy people are doing is patriotic, well, have a happy new year & I hope you find a way to get your head outta’ your ass.

What started out as non-violent has taken the opposite turn. This may be inevitable in any protests, especially without a strong leader. I cannot understand how a mother would subject her children to such risks. She should find another parent of similar persuasion and trade baby sitting.

    Wendy Davis,

I’m going to paraphrase here, but what you’re saying in your comment is that you think the Occupy movement is full of “wonderful people”, whom you want to “thank”, and that “no one is a terrorist”.

I suppose then it is correct to assume that you encourage and approve of the countless numbers of sexual assaults towards women at various occupy camps, the terrorism of small children who are attempting to make their way to school, the assault of the elderly, stealing food away from the homeless, the burning and desecration of the American flag, the rampant drug use, occupiers defecating on police cars, occupiers refusal to disperse when told to do so, the smashing and breaking of windows belonging to small business owners, the closing down of ports resulting in loss of wage, the antisemitism, and the communism. And you have the audacity to sit here and try to lecture the people who do not support this nonsense.

Does the rule of law mean nothing to you ? Do you even know what that is ?

I’m wondering where you get the idea of “class envy.” The way the upper class can maintain power is to make the middle class think it can move up. Everyone can be a billionaire.

Actually, it is not envy that motivates the occupiers, it is dislike of the uneven playing field. When so much power is held by so few, it makes being middle class very difficult. I think you will find many educated and otherwise prepared for participation people in the occupiers. They have followed the rules and find themselves jobless and threatened with homelessness.

Don’t focus on the people on fringes. They aren’t the movement. They have felt helpless for so long they cannot be constructive.
