NYC Woman Arrested And Charged With Self Abortion

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced Thursday that a Manhattan woman has been charged with self abortion.

Yaribely Almonte, 20, is accused of wrapping the fetus of her unborn daughter in plastic and dumping it in a garbage bin outside of her West 191st Street apartment.

Authorities are investigating whether the woman ended her pregnancy by drinking an herbal concoction billed as an abortion-causing tea, a person familiar with the case told The Associated Press Thursday.

The body was found on Tuesday by the building superintendent, who was sorting recyclables, police said. Almonte was arrested and charged on Wednesday night.

Under New York state law, an abortion can only be performed on a fetus older than 24 weeks if the procedure is necessary to save the woman’s life.

The Medical Examiner has yet to determine the cause of death. Almonte was released with an order to appear in court in January.

    It probably was a miscarriage. The herbal tea thing would not cause an abortion. This is pretty scary when a woman, already grieving for the loss of a fetus, is arrested on absurd charges.

      How would you feel if you miscarried and were arrested? Nothing even gave the age of the fetus in relation to the 24 week law. This reporting is incomplete. Ask for more details.

      Many women flush the embryo/fetus down the toilet. If she is not hemorrhaging why would she go to an ER? This is absurd. The real world has many miscarriages daily.

      I am not seriously ill. At one point I asked my psychiatrist to give me a letter so I could get family leave for my mental problems. He laughed. I am troubled, but I am not seriously mentally ill. What are your credentials for making such a diagnosis? I am becoming very annoyed by the people who are making wild accusations. I have problems that seem to be taken care of by medication. I have never been arrested, I have never harmed anyone, and the only time my name is in police blotters is because of speeding.     This sad tail is no different, Sandra is sadly ignorrant (typical liberal) of the herbal concoctions that orginate in the third world which will induce spontaneous abortion.  She also shows her lack of reasoning skills in some real intellectual gems she posted here, such as implying that women flush miscarriages down the toilet all the time so and don’t go to the ER or their doctor, obviously she’s never been pregnant or been around a woman who’s had a miscarriage.  When this happens the woman definitely needs to see her OB or go the ER since the placenta et al may still be in the uterus and if not removed will result in a horrible infection.  Also the baby was obviously to large to be flushed, thats why it was in the trash.

    Liberals are amusing but dangereous, stupid and arrogant are bad combinations.

      Your not thinking clearly, you are choosing to believe that she had a miscarriage even though she didn’t seek medical attention after she supposedly experienced the undesired loss of her baby, that’s not believable.  That’s why I believe she induced a spontaneous abortion and the fact that she was arrested shows the hypocrisy of our legal system, she could have went to any number of abortion clinics and paid them to murder he baby but she chose to do it herself.  No matter how many times you repeat that she had an unintentional miscarriage doesn’t make it so, she would have sought medical attention, instead she threw away the dead baby and hid herself.

      the article didn’t say anything about medical attention. I tried googling what to do when you have a miscarriage and use of herbal induction potions. There was no good advice except Planned Parenthood said they would provide information on cremation or burial. In rural areas, it would be very logical to bury the fetus. In the city, probably not an alternative. The information on the herbs said to not use them after the 6th week. I couldn’t figure out if that meant they weren’t effective or they might cause too much harm to the mother.
      I would object to the mother using an ER if she wasn’t hemorrhaging. However, in some cases that might be the only care available if she was medically indigent.
      This might be a test for the laws that have been proposed that the police must investigate every abortion, spontaneous or therapeutic.

      There is no hypocrisy in our justice system.  Anyone can be arrested if it looks like a law has been broken, but until she is tried and the evidence convicts her of a crime, she is not guilty.  It’s way too early to assume anything.
