Soldier Pawns Purple Heart To Buy His Family Christmas

Stars And Stripes:

Here’s a harsh reminder that yellow ribbons and care packages aren’t always enough support for the troops: A soldier on leave from Afghanistan walked into a Michigan consignment shop last week to pawn a Purple Heart to help cover his Christmas bills. From the Holland Sentinel:

The medal, which was sold in November by a West Michigan man serving in the military, now sits in a case at A-Z Outlet, a pawn shop on North River Avenue owned by Bryan VandenBosch. “He was falling on hard times,” VandenBosch said of the sale. “He said the same thing everybody else who comes in here says. He was short on funds.”

The man, who declined a Sentinel request to be interviewed, told VandenBosch he was shot while serving in Afghanistan and the Purple Heart he sold was one of two he had earned while serving overseas.

Veterans groups and other local charities have been flooding the store with donation requests in the days since the story broke, but the owner has been directing them to other military support programs. He said he has no intention of selling the medal to someone else, and will simply keep it safe until its rightful owner returns.

Yes it is but at the same time the response of support from the community is encouraging. I think a lot of people want to support and help our troops and veterans and just don’t know how.  Also our troops are proud humble men who rarely ask for help.

It’s a Catch 22.  Neither party knows how to “how”.  It is getting better after 10 years.  It was never rocket science but society and culture turned it into rocket science.  I have to say there are tons of civilians out there that want to get involved and the military shuts them out.  Most organizations want money not for people to get involved and absolutely pride can get in the way. Location is a big factor too.

I gotta stop I could be here all night talking about this.

I hear you… and yes I agree most orgs are all about the money. I am very very picky about what groups I work with. thankasoldier.net is one of the best. They take no money ever. Its all about creative ways to thank,
support and help the military.  I love that.

Wait! Any active duty soldier knows he can walk into any AAFES Exchange or Base Uniform Shop and buy another. For about $35 bucks. So the soldier tells a sob story to the store owner, who probably offers him stupid money for the medal (well, anything over $35!!). The soldier has some beer money for the night, and Mr Pawn Owner eventually figures out he’s been burned. So how does Mr Pawn make up for his loss? How about calling the local newspaper and telling the story, generating a ton of foot traffic into his store. Now the story goes viral, and people are calling the pawn shop looking to donate money to the family. Rather than referring donors to the family, he tells them to donate money to local veteran’s groups. Go figure.

When a medal such as a purple heart, bronze star/v, silver star and others that are awarded through commendation, the name of the recipient is engraved on the back of the medal.  That makes it a little simpler to tell if that person should be wearing the medal.  Medals earned through commendation, those for gallentry, heroics, etc.  are not allowed to be sold over the counter.

I dont know the full story but I see alot of guys come home from the sandbox who blow alot of money. We get more money for deploying then being in the states. But alot of our fellow troops are constantly spend money buying un-needed items in the Bazaars and what not. Or their family members are living outside their means of income.  Again I am not saying this is the case but alot of service members give other members a bad name when trying get over.  I pray this isn’t the case and the soldier gets whatever help is needed
