Sure so did most European cultures at the time, and Blacks owned black, The Romans enslaved everyone, even other Romans, Slavery was an unfortunate reality of the past that had no bearing on political persuasion until the time of our founding fathers who were divded on the issue, some were outright abolitionists, like Adams, others were torn personally, like Jefferson, he believed in the financial reality of it, but knew deep down it was wrong, so did Washington, others still were vehement supporters and racists. But Nationalism was around even then, and that issue was well above the fray of human rights, because Nationalism only extends to those people who do have rights, as either free people living somewhere they define as theirs, and their enemies, people they thing are trying to destroy that or take it away.
