MANCHESTER, NH — Rick Santorum had his final rally tonight before Granite Staters start voting Tuesday morning in the first-in-the-nation primary.
Supporters and press mobbed the candidate as he made his way around the packed restaurant and bar here. As they exited his final primary eve event, he, his wife and two of their children were surrounded by a crowd of protesters supporting Ron Paul, along with members of the Occupy movement.
As they walked out of Jillian’s in downtown Manchester, his staff protectively surrounded the family as the protesters formed a circle around them. They chanted, “Bigot, bigot!” and “Shame, shame!” as the former Pennsylvania senator and his clan tried to make their way to their car.
As the protesters swarmed, one member of the candidate’s entourage got shoved to the ground.
Santorum smiled as he walked the short distance from the restaurant, but a serious fight ensued, and his wife Karen had a frightened look on her face. The two children, Elizabeth and Daniel, followed closely behind. Their other children, including his 3-year-old daughter Bella, who has a rare genetic condition, are already in South Carolina.
Police were on hand and closed in to ultimately lead the Santorums and staff to safety.
