Excerpted from The National Journal: Facing a $27 million fundraising deficit, organizers of the Democratic National Convention are considering dropping a kick-off event at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Bloomberg reports.

Convention and campaign officials will make a decision later this week on the NASCAR-themed event, after the matter is discussed with President Obama, Bloomberg reported.

A spokesperson for the event told Bloomberg that “the Host Committee is not canceling CarolinaFest.” A Democratic National Convention Committee spokesperson declined to comment.

Democrats will get a $50 million grant from the Department of Homeland Security to fund police for the convention, but security for the Speedway event might not be eligible because it is not officially part of the convention.
