When colonial and British troops assembled at the North Bridge in Concord, Mass. in 1775 a standoff broke when one soldier opened fire. While it’s still unclear which side fired the first shot, it was later immortalized by poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, who suggested that “the shot heard ’round the world” was fired by an American. Who, the argument goes, Nugent is presenting himself as here.
