Excerpted from RED ALERT POLITICS: Rep. Matt Salmon (R-Ariz.) lashed out against President Obama’s gun control proposals on Wednesday, asking if a Fast and Furious probe would be included in the list.
“My home is the home to Fast and Furious, where there was gun-running across the Mexican border, and you know we still haven’t gotten any clear answers,” Salmon said. “Is that part of the President’s gun proposal? To finally come to grips and find out what actually happened with Fast and Furious and how far it went up to the top, to Eric Holder? Because I haven’t heard that yet.”
The Arizona Congressman said stricter enforcement of the current gun laws would provide a better solution to gun violence than creating new restrictions. Salmon joined several other Republican Congressman for the monthly “Conversation with Conservatives” held on Capitol Hill. A few of the other Representatives echoed Salmon’s call for more enforcement.
“I agree with my colleague from Arizona,” Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.) said. “The President did offer 23 executive actions that he proposed. I believe it was number 13 that I do agree with, which is enhanced enforcement of our current laws. The problem is, that’s his job. That’s the attorney general’s job. And I would appreciate if they would do their jobs.”
Many of the Representatives at Wednesday’s meeting expressed their dislike for all or part of the President’s gun control proposals. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) said that it’s not just conservatives who disagree with the President on this matter, but all Americans.
“You talk to anyone in the firearms industry, anyone in the ammunition industry right now their business is just booming,” he said. “So I think it’s Americans in general because Americans understand the Second Amendment is truly about freedom.”
