Excerpted from Politico: Obama on Friday honored the teachers and administrators slain at Sandy Hook Elementary with the nation’s second-highest civilian honor, Presidential Citizens Medals.

In an emotional ceremony with surviving family members in the East Room of the White House, he recognized their bravery and selflessness in the face of the mass shooter.

“When they showed up for work at Sandy Hook Elementary on Dec. 14 last year, they expected a day like any other, doing what’s right for their kids, spent a chilling morning readying classrooms and welcoming young students. They had no idea that evil was about to strike,” he said.

“When it did, they could have taken shelter by themselves, they could have focused on their own safety, on their own wellbeing, but they didn’t. They gave their lives to protect the precious children in their care, they gave all they had for the most innocent and helpless among us.”

Receving the posthumous honor were Sandy Hook principal Dawn Hochsprung, psychologist Mary Sherlach, and teachers Rachel D’Avino, Anne Murphy, Lauren Rousseau and Victoria Soto.

The Presidential Citizens Medal is given to “citizens of the United States of America who have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens.”
