Excerpted from BRIEFING ROOM: A man who set himself ablaze on the National Mall Friday has died of his injuries, according to authorities.
The individual passed away shortly before 9pm on Friday at a local hospital, a D.C. police spokesman told The Hill on Saturday.
The spokesman declined to comment on the individual’s identity or which hospital he was transported to after the incident.
However, recent reports state he was airlifted to MedStar Washington Hospital Center in northwest D.C.
He was so badly burned that he will need to be identified through DNA and dental records, according to reports by the Associated Press.
Local emergency units were sent to the Mall on Friday, in response to reports that a man doused himself with gasoline and lit himself on fire.
Before first responders could arrive at the scene, nearby joggers attempted to stamp out the fire using their shirts, the Associated Press reports.
The fire came a day after Capitol Hill was put on lock down after police opened fire on a woman who attempted to break through a security barrier near the Capitol.
The woman, 34-year-old Miriam Carey, of Stamford, CT., was killed at the scene.
Carey tried to ram a security checkpoint at the White House before leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase that ended by the Hart Senate Office Building near Constitution Avenue and Second Street NE.
