Excerpted from The Guardian: Saturday Night Live has ended weeks of hand-wringing and employed a black woman as a member of its cast.
Deadline Hollywood revealed that NBC’s flagship comedy show has signed up Sasheer Zamata to join the cast from 18 January. She will become SNL’s first black female cast member since 2007 and only the fifth among 137 cast members since the show launched in 1975. One of her best known sketches, seen more than 100,000 times on YouTube, has her imagining what it is like to be inside the mind of her male flasher.
Zamata’s unveiling brings to an end a tumultuous three months for SNL, since on 28 September it announced its list of six new cast members, with no black women among them. The show’s two black male comedians joined the chatter about the lack of diversity: Jay Pharoah said he hoped the producers would add a black woman quickly, and Kenan Thompson fanned the flames by saying that the absence of black comedians was partly explained by the fact that “they never find ones that are ready”.
